New Year New Sew Blog Tour

Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s already 2018. I’ve had a slow start to the year as far as sewing goes. We were able to travel for 2 weeks to visit both sides of the family for the holidays and it was nice to be able to unplug and have a break. The first part of our vacation we spent at a cabin LITERALLY in the middle of nowhere in Kansas with my family. We didn’t have cell service and there was no internet either. After a day of withdrawal, I actually really loved it. You forget how much of your time is wasted on your phone until you can’t use it anymore. The second part of our trip, we flew to Seattle to spend time with my in-laws. We had a wonderful time and even had snow for a couple of days! The girls were able to build their first snowmen ever. We don’t usually get snow in Arkansas so it was a lot of fun for them.

I failed to make my kids Christmas dresses this year. I simply ran out of time and it wasn’t the end of the world! I did however get to make myself the Mama Joy by Made for Mermaids

After returning home, I was ready to jump back into sewing until I realized my sewing room had been left in a state of disaster after my last minute, frantic, holiday sewing. So I avoided my sewing room for a good week. I finally talked myself into cleaning it up and even fabric purging. I really hate to part with any fabric, but I realized I had some fabric that I was just never going to use and the clutter was causing me anxiety!

Still not perfect but at least it all fits on the shelf and isn’t stashed all over the room anymore!

So today, I’m participating in the New Year, New Sew Blog Tour hosted by Sewing with Ti. Originally, I planned to sew something to wear for my birthday. Which is today! Guys, I’m 30 years old! I feel like I’ve just hit a rite of passage or something. Anyway, I ended up getting sick this week and have spent most of my time lying in bed feeling sorry for myself while my kids did who knows what to my house! So unfortunately, I didn’t get anything made for my birthday. I’m still feeling pretty crappy today, but maybe by some miracle, I’ll feel up to sewing this afternoon and make myself a cute outfit to wear out tonight. The hubby and I are planning to go see The Greatest Showman and get some dinner. I’m exited for a night out and my kids are excited for a babysitter to come play with them!

Rather than share a new make, I’m sharing a couple of my goals for the New Year. First, I’m making a commitment to be more judicious when buying fabric. I often buy fabric just because I like it and have no plans in mind for it. I think I’ll find a project eventually, which I often do. But I’ve collected too much fabric that I don’t know what to do with it. I also will occasionally order a mystery box of fabric because the surprise is fun. However, I usually receive at least a couple of fabrics that really aren’t my taste that I will most likely never use. So I’m making a commitment to be more wise in my fabric spending this year. I plan to run every fabric purchase past my husband first too to help keep me accountable. Guys, it’s gonna be painful. But I’m going to do it!

My second goal is to sew up patterns that I already own that I’ve NEVER even printed out or sewn. I have a problem hoarding patterns and never using them. And I have some cute patterns that I just haven’t gotten around to sewing yet! A few of the patterns I plan to use for me this year are the Mama Isabel* by Made for Mermaids

The Summer Kimono* by Patterns for Pirates,

And the Terra Tunic* by Love Notions.

I also have several kids patterns I haven’t used yet that I want to try as well including the Joy Dress* by Made for Mermaids

The Riptide Swim Shorts* by 5 Out Of 4 Patterns,

And the Cozy Critter Socks* by Peekaboo Patterns.

There are more I want to try, but these are the six that I’m making a goal to sew throughout the year. You’ll have to check back and make sure I’m staying on task!

I’m so sorry you’re unwell, but hope you had a good birthday.
I resonate with the “ooh, it’s pretty, I’ll buy it” feeling.
I really enjoyed reading your blog. I like to think I tell stories in mine, and it feels you do the same too. I’ll be back or read more
    Keep sewing,

Story telling is half the fun of writing a blog, isn’t it? What is your blog? I’d love to check it out!

The Riptides are awesome! I made a pair for me and wore them all summer last year.

They look awesome. I do actually have the women’s and the kid’s version of the pattern now that I think about it. I’ll have to try and make both this summer!
